Matthew has designed sound and composed songs and original music for more than 400 theatrical productions across the country.
His work off-broadway has appeared at the Public Theater, The Lincoln Center, and 59E59 Theaters. Regionally, Mr. Nielson’s work has appeared at Portland Center Stage, The Denver Center for the Performing Arts, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Dallas Theatre Center, Milwaukee Rep, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, and Actor’s Theater of Louisville, among others.
In the Washington, DC Area, his work has appeared at Ford’s Theater, Arena Stage, Shakespeare Theater Company, Woolly Mammoth, Studio Theater, Theater J, Olney Theater Center, and Round House Theatre, where he is a Resident Artist.
Nielson’s work in theater has garnered him five Helen Hayes Awards and dozens of nominations.

Matthew has written thematic pieces, underscoring, transition music, orchestrations, full scores, and songs for hundreds of theatrical productions around the world.

Matthew is the founder and primary composer behind the production music library The Curious Music Company. CMC music has appeared in commercials for Delivery.com, The Discovery Channel, NBC Sports, UFC on FOX, The Magicians, Hometrust Bank, and v05; branding packages for the Tribeca Film Festival and EPIX Drive-In; and the films Blue, Elbow Grease, A Sleepover Story, Trip, A God Fearin’ Man, The Long Road, and Londinium, among others.

Matthew has more than a decade of experience in the film and television industries. From location audio, to music, to audio post production, Nielson can take projects from beginning to end, or work on individual parts of the process.
If you are a theater company venturing into the world of digital content for the first time, Nielson will consult with you on your projects and help you understand what goes in to post production and determine a reasonable timeline.
Matthew comes equipped with a full location audio kit including a 6-channel Sound Devices digital field recorder, wireless mic channels, boom mic & pole, and timecode sync system.
